Departments
Western Reserve Health Education is comprised of several dedicated departments that will support you and advance your medical education across all levels. These include Undergraduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, Research, the Simulation Center, and the Health Science Library—each playing a vital role in fostering your learning, innovation, and professional development.
Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME)
The Department of Undergraduate Medical Education works with medical students in their second, third, and fourth year of medical school. WRHE is considered a major teaching institution for Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). WRHE offers NEOMED students’ clerkships and electives in their third and fourth year of medical school.
Graduate Medical Education (GME)
WRHE Graduate Medical Education offers a unique educational experience rooted in community-based, patient-centered care. In our rural program, residents gain broad clinical exposure and increased hands-on education, working closely with attending physicians across a wide range of specialties. The setting fosters strong physician–patient relationships and continuity of care, while also preparing residents to address the distinct healthcare challenges faced by rural populations. With a supportive learning environment, access to modern resources, and a focus on developing well-rounded, adaptable physicians, the program equips residents with the skills and confidence needed to practice in a diverse range of healthcare settings.
Continuing Medical Education (CME)
The Department of Continuing Medical Education (CME) provides a variety of high-quality educational activities that support, facilitate and expand the knowledge of developments and research while keeping our staff up to date on medical standards and technical advances. Our continuing education courses seek to maintain, enhance and update the knowledge, skills and professional performance of healthcare providers to improve patient care and health outcomes.

The Department of CME falls under the umbrella of Western Reserve Health Education and is recognized as accredited provider of continuing medical education by the Ohio State Medical Association. The Department of CME sponsors a Continuing Medical Education Committee that reviews, approves and awards CME credits to all CME educational activities. The types of educational activities include: regularly scheduled conferences (Grand Rounds; symposia and conferences; teleconferences; and enduring materials (e.g., online learning, monographs, CD/ROMs, etc.). The department tracks category 1 CME for all physicians to assist them in meeting their certification and licensure criteria.
Research Department
The Research Department plays a vital role in advancing academic inquiry and scholarly work within the residency programs. Residents and faculty are encouraged to engage in scholarly activity, with access to mentorship, educational resources, and structured support throughout the research process—from study design and data analysis to presentation and publication. This environment fosters critical thinking, innovation, and a deeper understanding of how research advances clinical care.
A key strength of the department is its dedicated Institutional Review Board, which provides oversight to ensure that all research involving human subjects is conducted ethically and in compliance with federal regulations. The IRB supports investigators through protocol review, approval processes, and ongoing monitoring, helping maintain the highest standards of patient safety and research integrity.
With a strong infrastructure in place, the Research Department empowers residents to contribute meaningfully to medical knowledge while developing the skills necessary for lifelong scholarly engagement.
The Simulation Center
The Simulation Center is a cornerstone of hands-on learning within the residency program, providing a safe, controlled environment where learners can develop and refine clinical and procedural skills. Through high-fidelity simulation, task trainers, and scenario-based training, residents gain experience managing both routine and high-acuity situations without risk to patients. This approach enhances clinical competence, decision-making, teamwork, and communication.
Health Science
Library
The Health Science Library serves as a vital resource hub for residents, faculty, and students, supporting both clinical practice and academic advancement. It provides access to a wide range of medical literature, journals, textbooks, and online databases, ensuring learners can quickly find reliable, evidence-based information at the point of care. Skilled library staff offers guidance in literature searches, in addition to librarian mediated searches, reference management, and research support, helping users navigate complex information efficiently. Our librarian also provides assistance with the entire process of getting published in medical journals.
